.. of churches, temples and beaches

Coloane island or Ilha da Coloane ("Lou-wan" in Cantonese) is one of the outlying islands of Macau, the other being Taipa. When Macau was the center of trade betweem China and the West, the island of Coloane, with its deserted coves, rugged cliffs, large sea caves and densely forested hills, proved a convenient base for pirates who preyed on the righ cargoes. Today its sandy beaches, hiking trails, and other attractions make it a pleasure retreat.
