Taipa island or Ilha da Taipa ("Tub-Tzai" in Cantonese) is one of the outlying islands of Macau, the other being Coloane. The island of Taipa is Macau's traditional countryside where you find quaint and beautiful colonial buildings with lots of history. Once considered remote from the city, both the islands of Taipa and Coloane have developed as integrated suburbs since being linked to the mainland by two bridges and a causeway.
In the 18th and early 19th centuries, Taipa consisted of 2 hilly islands and a protected harbour which provide for the traders from China. Small vessels will transport cargoes of muslin, manufactured goods and opium up the Pearl River to Canton and return with tea, silk and porcelain for export around the world. Taipa is now once again an international gateway with the opening of the Macau International Airport.
