The Dataran - Shah Alam

The Dataran

Dataran Shah Alam - hot spot for youngsters

Dataran Shah Alam is in fact a Square where people "lepak" (Malay word for "hang-out"). It is situated near to the Tourist Information Centre and the Wisma MBSA. This a favourite place for youngsters to hang out , especially during the weekends. The Square is near to the shopping malls and to many bistros and fast food outlets. The are "amphitheatre" seats for you to relax and there is a fountain to enhance the ambience. At night, many will sit at these seats after having their dinner at the nearby eateries.

During the National Day, 31st August every year, celebrations and parades will be held here. The road will be then closed for the function.

Address: along Jln Indah

Directions: next to the Store shopping mall (Alam Sentral)

Shah Alam Lake Gardens

Shah Alam Lake Gardens is a vast man-made lake in the town centre. It is located along Dato Menteri Road and Persiaran Masjid Road. It is a popular spot for joggers and runners and is pretty crowded on weekdends as most families will bring their children there either during the early morning or the evening. The playground has lots of playthings for the children. There are a lot of sheds for you to sit and even have picnics. There is also a huge pond where you can feed the fishes and the tortises . It is the site of annual events such as the International Boat Show and the Selangor Orchid Exhibition. Picnic area dot this well-kept parkland and a floating seafood restaurant stands on the fringes of the lakes.

See more pictures attached, one on the night scene, beautiful!

Address: long stretch of road along Persiaran Masjid

the dome and the minarets of the Blue Mosque - Shah Alam

the dome and the minarets of the Blue Mosque

The Blue Mosque - Majestic!

The Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque or simple "the Blue Mosque" is situated in the heart of Shah Alam. It is call the Blue Mosque because of its colour blue on the roof of the mosque. The Mosque is built on a 14.6 hectare land of green and there's a lake nearby. It was commissioned in 1980s, completed in 1988, and is the largest mosque in Malaysia and South East Asia.

The Blue mosque is most magnificent when captured as night as the lightings enhance the structures and the colors of the mosque (see night pic of mosque attached). Its minarets at 142.3 metres, were once the tallest in the world. (lost it mark to Hasan II Mosque in Casablanca). The blue dome is also one of the biggest of its kind. The main prayer hall is vast and can accomodate at least 24,000 worshippers. The walls and the roof are beautifully adorned with superbly-crafted motifs. Decorative Islamic calligraphy enhaces the dome and main prayer hall, while the overall architecture integrates Malay and Moorish design elements. The mosque's pulpit has been executed in carved timber, a masterpiece of local craftsmen from the state of Kelantan. The splendid chandelier was contributed by the late Sultan of Selangor. The domes and minarets are the architectural splendour of the Mosque.

Most of the time you are not allowed to enter the mosque unless you are a Muslim. There are special occasions where visitiors are allowed to go into the compounds of the Mosque but not into the prayer rooms unless you are a Muslim. To get the timing of visit, need to check with the Tourist Information Centre.

Address: along Persiaran Masjid, Shah Alam

Directions: Once you are in the town of Shah Alam or near to any of the big hotels like Concorde Shah Alam, Grand Blue Wave Hotel ... you will be able to see it.
