When John Lennon died....

by debtravers - last update: Oct 3, 2006

December 1980

Beautiful eh?
I was working in a hotel in Garmisch Partenkirchen (cleaning skirting boards, heard it on the radio.. ) and having one of the best winters of my life (so far!). There was a huge amount of snow that winter, months of living in a white wonderland - it was so beautiful. This is a great town in both winter and summer, lots of skiing, good pubs (v important for a brit) and -back then- lots of travellers in and out sharing stories and getting work for a few months (was a big US military vacation area). Ideal location to explore the Alps, Austria.etc and you get to meet loads of like-minded people..... I also met a guy from New York so just had to follow him home......but thats another travel page!

Traditions still going strong...

Garmisch-Partenkirchen dates back over 1100 years and was originally two towns. In 1935 Adolf Hitler had the town mayors unite the towns in readiness for the Winter Olympics in 1936 and they have remained so since. Garmisch feels the newer of the two, whereas Partenkirchen is where you feel more of the history, with its cobbled streets. GAP is very near the Austrian border and has direct train services to both Munich and Innsbruck (the train journey to Innsbruck is terrific, the views are just amazing).

Summer and Winter - you'll love it here.

This town has loads to offer whether you're here in Summer or Winter;
In summer there are countless walks/hikes, mountain biking, river rafting on the Loisach, swimming at Kainzenbad or one of the lakes, sailing on one of the lakes, you can go climbing,
In Winter of course, there's ski-ing, downhill or cross-country, snowboarding, curling, sledging, ice-skating....or you could always go to the top of the Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain, have a drink and enjoy the views.
Afterwards there are numerous bars, restaurants, nightclubs where you can relax after your strenuous days doing all/any of the above!!

Pros:"Great town with loads to offer."
Cons:"Can be a bit pricey"
In A Nutshell:"One of the nicest places I've lived."
