"Scio, Oregon. Trail's End for the pioneers" Scio by hindu1936
Scio Travel Guide: 5 reviews and 10 photos
Located near the foothills of the magnificent Cascade Mountains, this thriving community was founded by pioneers who crossed the Santiam Pass in covered wagons. With ample clean water, open spaces, and the nearby mountains, it has, despite the industrial encroachment of nearby Berlin, Oregon, managed to prevent over-building; thus maintaining the calm of a country village in spite of the roar of traffic, the clamor of the subways, and low flying aircraft. The tourist industry has blossomed here to become a mainstay, and only last year both visiting tourists were treated kindly and pointed to the nearby covered bridge where photos could be taken. Population growth has remained steady at plus or minus one each year, consistently holding at about 410 not counting the sheep or the two tourists.
Because of its proximity to the mountains, there is always the slight chance of snow not far from Scio. Although it never really poses a problem, it could for the unwary. The walk to the bottom of the hill to collect the mail is never undertaken without adequate preparation. This hill happens to be called Willamette Pass, and is a good place to practice walking to the bottom of a hill in Scio. Be careful not to walk too far and fall into one of the many lakes. Rumor has it that some people charge money to give you a ride to the top of the hill on a daily basis. It must be true because there are certainly a lot of people doing it there about an hour east of Eugene on hiway #58.
