Tourist Trap: Cheap Concert Tickets? No way!
  • Tip Rating:
  • When you walk pass the Opera in the 1st district, you will notice that there will be some people dressed up as Mozart or period costumes and stopping you to ask if you would like to go to a classical concert. You might think that the concert is held in the infamous Opera but far from it. These people are trying to sell overpriced tickets to concerts held in smaller theatres in other parts of towns.

At Least Do This: If you still would like to attend a musical concert for a lower (but not cheap) price than the Opera, go ahead and buy a ticket. When you get home, you can always say that you've been to one in Vienna.

Tourist Trap: Overrated Sacher Torte at the Hotel Sacher
  • Tip Rating:
  • Almost every Vienna guidebook will tell you that you must try the infamous Sacher Torte, an extremely rich Viennese classic made with layers (usually three) of chocolate cake filled with apricot jam and enrobed in a creamy-rich chocolate glaze. And, they say you must try at the Hotel Sacher. Well, I do enjoy the occasional sacher torte but not enough to pay top money (a small whole cake will cost you over 30 euros) when I can get a nice torte in another coffeehouse or Oberlaa Cafe

At Least Do This: Go ahead and have your cake. At the very least, soak up the glamour of having cake & coffee at a famous fancy hotel

Tourist Trap: Cental Cafe: the service was bad
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Central Cafe first opened in 1860 in the former Bank and Stockmarket building in Herrengasse 14, and was a meeting place for Viennese intellectuals to come to discuss over coffee & pastries. Therefore, the cafe holds some historical value which is one of the attractions apart from their good food & drinks.

When I got here, I waited for 20 min but the waiter never came round to ask for my order so I left without ordering anything. I guess since the place is packed with tourists, the cafe can afford to choose their patrons. From the menu, the prices are higher than average so bring extra money in case you want to have more than a hot beverage.

At the Sacher hotel you pay also for a minimum "coverage" charge. That is how the upscale european hotels "protect" themselves from bargain haunting "crowds". For the original Sacher torte you go to the konditorei "Demel" on the Kohlmarkt street. Euro 5.
