  • Restaurant Name: Castelnuovo Pizzeria Ristorante

This restaurant serves a good selection of Italian food & wine. Located in the first district, this restaurant is easily accesible by U-bahn (stop at Swedenplatz). The decor & ambiance is comfortable with the wood finishes. Service is also friendly (Vienna standard, of course) and fast. Castelnuovo specialises in home made pastas and pizzas. Try their salads & different choice of pastas, and finish off with a hot cup of coffee and tiramisu. The wine is also good and reasonably priced

Favorite Dish: Tagliatelle al Salmone, Penne all arabbiata & tiramisu

  • Restaurant Name: Restaurant Waldviertlerhof

This restaurant serves really good Austrian fare at reasonable price. You cannot go wrong with any of the choices from the menu. Apart from the typical dishes like wiener schnitzel, you can try their salads, meat dishes and delicious desserts. The hotel is quaint and always busy, so book a table before coming here. In the spring / summer, the garden is open and you can have a nice lunch in the open.

In autumn, it's the season for pumpkin and Sturm, which is the first press from the grapes. This drink comes in red and white sturm and only available during this time

Favorite Dish: I love the chicken salad, local wine and pancakes with ice-cream (eis palaschinken)

  • Restaurant Name: Oberlaa Cafe

Everytime I am in Vienna, I won't miss my favourite Oberlaa hot chocolate or heiss schokolade (I'm a smart-ass sometimes) in the city centre. You can also enjoy a selection of good set lunches of local & international dishes (but don't expect fusion or oriental, just european)

During my last trip, I went to the Kurpark Oberlaa in the area around the Laaer Berg. In this area thermal sulphur springs were discovered in the 18th century and so they built a place where you can soak in the hot water (great in winter). Later, have a nice lunch at their restaurant with its namesake

Apart from hot chocolate, you can also have lunch but the best is the selection of wonderful cakes including the sacher torte.

Favorite Dish: Hot Chocolate, coffee and cakes

Ribs of Vienna: Best ribs in town!

  • Restaurant Name: Ribs of Vienna

This is a must go for me whenever I'm in Vienna. It serves the best ribs I've had and for a reasonable price (11 euro for a metre of ribs). Normally, I'd share one plate with someone because the portions are huge. Apart from the ribs, you can order other local specialities but why eat anything other than ribs here??? The restaurant is located in the cellar or basement part of the building as is quite popular with locals & tourists so make a reservation when you plan to come here

Favorite Dish: The original ribs is my favourite, second is the mexican ribs. The beer and house wine is pretty good too

  • Restaurant Name: Cafe Cortez

Cafe Cortez is located just outside of the Kettenbrukengasse station, next to the Naschmarkt. This is a place I like to go to for coffee and sandwiches, especially on a cold day. The atmosphere is modern & cool and service is reliable. The prices are also quite reasonable so you can have a full meal under euro 10

Favorite Dish: They make a mean cheeseburger and chicken sandwich

Whenever I miss some Asian food, it's time to go to Le Wei Restaurant. The restaurant is located in the 1st district and close to the Schottenring tram & U-bahn stop. The interior is decorated in Chinese style and when you enter, you are welcomed by friendly staff. The restaurant is run by Chinese immigrants from India so they can understand when I want my food to be extra spicy.

The prices are pretty reasonable for a Chinese restaurant in the 1st district. I can have a simple meal of fried rice or noodles or I can order separate meat & vegetable dishes. Other than Chinese food, they also serve Japanese food. This place can get quite packed, especially during lunch hour

Favorite Dish: There's lots on offer that I like from the noodles to the meat dishes. Try some tasty dim sum and springs rolls too.

Demel: Original Sacher Torte here? Delish!

I've been told that Demel's owner bought the recipe to the infamous Sacher Torte from its creator and to this day, people are still debating who has the "real" Sacher Torte. Whichever it is, the pastries here are super yummy! The cafe is located in the prestigious shopping area, surrounded by luxury boutiques such as Louis Vuitton & Gucci.

The restaurant still maintains its original interior design which is quite lovely. I can sit here and enjoy a hot beverage & sweet pastry and imagine myself being back in the old days. The cafe is always packed with Viennese & visitors alike so be patient if you can't get a seat. When the weather is warm, it's great to sit outside and enjoy the weather.

The other attractions are the "Bill Clinton" and "Kofi Annan" cakes on display behind a glass wall in the kitchen area.

    OPENING HOURS
    daily from 10.00 am – 7.00 pm

Favorite Dish: The pastries are the best, and of course the hot drinks like the hot chocolate. The freshly made chocolates are fantastic as well

typical Austrian specialities: Good food & fun at the Marchfelderhof

  • Restaurant Name: typical Austrian specialities

The first thing I noticed about the Marchfelderhof is its imposing facade. The building is huge with bright yellow walls and a strange looking giant spargel or asparagus statue at the entrance. When you walk in, the place gets a little more wild. There is an amazing collection of celebrity photographs covering the walls (look for the likes of Richard Burton, Liz Taylor, Richard Gere & local personalities) which probably means they once dined here. Other weird & wonderful memorabilias fill the corridors and even in the restrooms

We decided to dine "outdoors", which is a room in the middle of the building with an open roof. The service was fast & friendly which I like. When the waiter knew that we were from Malaysia, he brought us a Malaysian flag and asked us to write on it.

We were served with some snacks (complimentary) which were yummy while waiting for our meal to arrive. Sometimes, the starters were enough to make me full

Favorite Dish: I ordered a very nice ribs dish and wine. During the spring, they will prepare several dishes made with large asparagus, which I don't like. But other than that, the food here is great and love to return again.

Around the Naschmarkt area, there are several restaurants where you can eat without breaking your budget. China Zentrum China Restaurant is one of them. From what I gather, the restaurant was opened by a former waitress from China. The restaurant is designed minimally, mainly table & chairs with little decorations but it is clean. The staff will greet you when you enter and quickly hand you the menu.

You can get a decent Chinese meal here for under 10€, which I think is great since it's in a good location and close to the city center.

Favorite Dish: I enjoy the dim sum, deep fried "char koy", wantan or dumpling soup and the freshly prepared soya bean milk.

I came here during my second visit to Vienna and had never tried Greek food before. I had been walking outside in -10°C temperature and upon entering the restaurant, it was a far different atmosphere because it was warm & lively. The restaurant is decorated with Greek style, with replicas of historical statues. The staff was great too, always friendly and accommodating plus they were all Greeks.

As for the menu, the dishes are typically Greek e.g Greek salad, souvlaki, gyros, fresh seafood and sweet desserts. And of course, wash it all down with a shot of ouzo. The food I had was good and value for money. Will return!
