Home of the Famous Prison Boab Tree

This fabulous fat tree is known as a boab tree, rounded in shape due it's nature of holding water in it's trunk to hydrate itself during the long, extremely hot dry season. In this photo there are plentiful green leaves, which is rather deceptive as it is the dry season (though there was a recent heavy rainfall). This particular tree has an extra special claim to fame when it was reputedly used to hold prisoners being transported from Darwin to Perth while the police took a break. Now the tree is under special Aboriginal Heritage Protection. This boab tree is only 10 mins from the town of Derby, and well worth a visit.
