"Dessel, Piece, Quiet and Water" Dessel by AndIDream

Dessel Travel Guide: 5 reviews and 11 photos

This is my hometown, a small town in the heart of the Belgian region, the "Kempen", which is known for it's piece and quiet! The many woods are ideal to do some walking, mountainbiking or cycling. The town is surrounded by many canals and there's even a crossroad of canals, unique in Europe, as shown on the pic. Dessel and it's neigbouring town Mol are known for their sand which was discovered when the canals were dug out. The sand is ideal for the making of glass.

Boeretang

The Boeretang is an old farm which is now a monument and a can be rented for receptions etc...

Probably the first time the area around Boeretang was inhabited was around 1300. It had been deteriorated and rebuilt many times, the last time was in 1993. Hendrik Conscience, the writer, stayed at the Boeretang for 2 months when he was a soldier in the Belgian army in 1931. De stories of the local Karl Minnen inspire him to write one of his books. In the beginning of the 20th century the farm is property of King Albert I for a while and in 1976 the site became a protected area. The three farm buildings are protected 3 years later.

The Marketplace

The marketplace has been renewed rastically over the last couple of years. On the picture you see the old town hall, the church is there and also a monument called the "Waterpump" which was built in 1842 to control fires. The newest realisation is the "Campinaplein", on the other side of the road from the marketplace. The Campinaplein is built where there used to be a brewery called Campina, and is adjacent to the new town hall called 'The Plaetse'. The Campinaplein was chosen as the most beautifull plaza in the province Antwerpen in august 2005.
