"Biggest Little City" Reno by DSwede

Reno Travel Guide: 348 reviews and 894 photos

I grew up in Tahoe. Vegas is an oasis of lights and people. Reno is the common man's middle ground. Yes, its not as flashy as Vegas, but here's the rub... nobody there wants it to be like Vegas. Yes there is gambling as well as a few other guilty pleasures of Vegas, but nobody there wants it to be Vegas.

There are lots of good little venues with live music and the big stages hold some big name concerts. UNR has a campus in the north side and with that, there is a fairly active and healthy night life, you just have to know where to go. The hangouts change to frequently for me to tell you where exactly to go. There's a few museums and other things, but mostly its a blue collar town.

Carson City (~1hr south) is the state capital. Not particularly worth the visit unless you have specific business there.

Virginia City (~30min south, then ~30min east) is an old mining town. Many of the store fronts and side walks are still done up in old-west style. You can have a drink at the Bucket-O-Blood saloon, and even take a tour down some of the old shafts.

Incline Village (my home) is fairly quiet unless you are a skier or hiker.

Verdi is a quiet stop on the way up I-80 to Truckee. When passing through, if you have time, stop to walk along some of the old viaducts on the river!

Truckee is a fairly hip place. The old-town is done up in old-west style with some good restaurants, cafes, stores, etc. And just beyond Truckee is Squaw Valley & Alpine Meadows.

South Lake Tahoe is more of a mini-Vegas. Night shows, bars, casinos, shopping and skiing.

But if you are venturing farther out, or wish to see get some more personal insights visit my Nevada page for my thoughts on my home state.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Conveniences of a big city, without the suffocating feeling.
  • Cons:Road closures and airport delays in the winter are common.
  • In a nutshell:The city can be warm and sunny while the hills are still inviting for winter skiing.

We were a bit surprised to find 7 inches of snow waiting for us upon landing in Reno. I like your page. I need to give Reno another shot, I'll escape the casinos this time.

Nice page of Reno. Used to drive to Reno during weekends from SF. Bring back memories.
