"Tucked in the quiet mountains" Gruyères by DSwede

Gruyères Travel Guide: 77 reviews and 356 photos

Gruyeres is a picturesque town and citadel built in the lush mountain side about 1hr20min ride up from Montreux. The ownership of the castle has changed hands many times depending on who was in debt to whom and who was in control of the local lands. The castle has undergone a series of restorations, but has been open to the public for quite some time. The small quaint castle in the green mountainous valley is wonderful, as is the train ride to get here. Inside the train station is a large glass window where you can view an automatic robot turning isles of cheese wheels.

On my visit, we made Gruyeres a stopping point between Montreux and Interlaken.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Vistas from the castle are quite memorable.
  • Cons:Its a long, slow (but comfortable) train from Montreux
  • In a nutshell:A small mountain town about cheese and castles.

actually the museum is dedicated to Giger in general not only his works about Alien films. Lovely town for sure and great cheese :)
