"The Island of Sea Gulls" Ilha da Berlenga by DSwede

Ilha da Berlenga Travel Guide: 40 reviews and 78 photos

Berlenga Island is relatively small, but is over populated with sea gulls. While walking around, I saw a few geckos and millions of sea gulls. Their obvious white evidence tails are visible everywhere. They do not have any predators so they nest right on the ground (there are no trees on the island) and do not shy from people walking by.

Also on the island (particularly in the summer) are lots of campers. Camping spots are limited and reservations are needed in the peak seasons. The line for the last ferry can be quite long too.

The small Fortress right on the water offers a picturesque backdrop to the island's steep slopes.
