"Southern Gateway to the Coast" Haast by DSwede

Haast Travel Guide: 27 reviews and 70 photos

Haast is a tiny dot on the map, or at least it should be. Many maps have Haast labeled as a large dot at the southern end of the West Coast. The problem here is that size is relative. Its the only thing of quantifiable size south of Fox Glacier.

Any further south, and the coast line is impassable over land as you get into Fiordland. It took decades to make, but ultimately the Gates of Haast were surmounted, connecting the road through the mountains through the interior to the East.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Rugged mountains have lots of sport options.
  • Cons:Without private transport, your options are extremely limited.
  • In a nutshell:A very quiet place, ideal for nature enthusiasts.
