Barcelona for 2 months

by DSwede - last update: May 4, 2007

Bacelona from El Moro
How was I so lucky to get a training assignment in Venezuela!?! I'm not sure, but I must say I got a good one there.

I lived in Barcelona, or El Moro more exactly, and commuted to Jose everyday. That was about an hour each way. The driving was not the worst that I had been in, but was by no means great. It was comfortable enough to get around in.

It was a while back since I was there, I was there when the September 11 plane crashes took place. It was quite a fiasco trying to get home with the ban on international flights, etc, but that was hopefully a once in a lifetime problem that will not need to be explained.

What I can tell you, is that like most other South American/Latin countries, the people do not have much, but are willing to share it with you. The people at my work, the people at the hotel, the strangers in the city were all more than amicable; they were genuinely interested and curious.

I wondered the streets and the shopping areas (I believe the large mall was called Lo Mejor), and the back streets. On two occasions, I even went with some new friends about an hour's drive east along the coast to some beaches where the locals go. And all of this happened with absolutely no one speaking English other than myself, only relying on my (at that time) pathetic Spanish.

There might generally be some Anit-American sentiments in Venezuela, but by and large that is towards the government and they love the American peoples.

This is not the Barcelona I was thinking about ...but it looks nice down to the water.
