The main island of Macau is bustling with people, old history and more casinos than is needed, but the quieter islands of Taipa and Coloane offer a quiet reprieve while still giving some good sites.

You must cross ~2km bridge to the south of of Macau to visit Taipa. Once there, you will quickly find some residential areas, a smaller variety of casinos and a the old Portuguese Town.

Unfortunately that probably won't last long because the two islands of Taipa and Coloane are now linked with reclaimated land (the area is called Cotai). This will no doubt soon become overgrown with apartments and casinos.

Pros and Cons

Pros:The historic Portuguese influenced fishing village heart is still here.
Cons:The growth of the casinos and highrises is knocking on its door.
In a nutshell:The small size makes it a relatively easy area to tour on foot in a long day.
