My stay on Male was actually fairly brief, maybe about 8 hours. However, my overall stay in the Maldives was 10 days. The only moments on dry ground were those in Male.

Landing in the airport, you will likely have to take a water taxi to the main island spots and hotels that you want to stay at. The waterways are a congested area of big boats, yachts, taxis and local fishing boats.

The mainland is flat and eternally tropical. But there are a few market places and jewelery stores to visit.

The diving is great. Being an island archipelago in the open ocean, it has some shallows around the atolls and some deep spots too. The shallow continental shelf makes for some seriously strong currents during tidal shifts.

Pros and Cons

In a nutshell:Gateway to some of the best diving in the Indean Ocean.

Too bad that corals worldwide are badly affected by climate changes and the lack of conservation.
