Tabin Wildlife Reserve

About ~30km east of Lahad Datu is Tabin Wildlife Reserve that has an eco-lodge. You can drive here yourself, but if you wish to see anything other than the eco-lodge, you will be unfortunate. There is a daily 10am walking tour that will take you to the mud volcanoes, where you can "look at footprints and try to determine what animals they came from" (or so one of the brochures says). If you wish to actually see the elephants and rhinos, etc. that the park claims to have, you may only be so lucky if you are staying there as a researcher and are allowed more access than this once-daily walking path.

If you wish to make it for the 10am walking tour, you must remember that it is at least a one hour drive from town.

Unique Suggestions: If you come here, you will not likely see any land-based wildlife other than the occasional monkey. However, birds will be quite common in all shapes, sizes and colors.
