I gather many airline lounges for business/first class passengers have ‘day rooms’, but Narita is the only airport I know where all travellers can have access (at reasonably small cost – I paid 2500Y for four hours). What’s a ‘day room’? It’s a miniature hotel room with a bed, ensuite facilities, and toiletries provided, which can be rented by the hour if you show your boarding pass. Should you be facing an extended period between flights, believe me that the chance to freshen up and have a good nap really helps make it not only tolerable, but almost enjoyable.

Directions: The ‘Day Rooms’ are upstairs in the main terminal (Terminal 1). As necessary, take the shuttle from Terminal 2, then go directly ahead to the top level and turn sharp left. The information desk is nearby and will direct you to it.

This tip links with the "Hotels" tip. If your connecting flights involve an overnight stay (eg from Australia to Europe, the arrival is in the early evening and the departure late next morning), you are given free overnight accommodation in the airline's hotel.

A real benefit of staying in the airline’s hotel is that seat allocation is available from a counter in the foyer. This gets the process out of the way virtually at leisure, meaning that departure becomes simply a matter of catching the (free) shuttle bus to the terminal, going through security, and waiting to go.

While I waited for my aircraft, I was able to access the internet from a ‘pay’ terminal in the departure lounge in Terminal 1: very convenient. The cost was only 100 Y for ten minutes. On my return I did not find a similar arrangement in Terminal 2, though I didn’t look hard, but there are desks for laptop computer users.
