WHEELS display

Every year, the vehicle enthusiast clubs of Canberra and the surrounding region gather for a major public display of their vehicles – the main purpose is to raise money for local charities (it’s been very successful at that, too). I must add though, that it also provides a great opportunity to catch up with infrequently-seen mates from other clubs! Typically about 700 collectable vehicles are on display, ranging from exotic sportscars to firetrucks and from ancient veteran cars with gleaming brass to, this year, a featured display by the Canberra Bicycle Museum.

The event is held every March, on the lawns in front of Old Parliament House. There is no charge to come along, look, and enjoy the show. These photos were taken at the 2007 event.

The ACT has quite liberal drinking laws. Clubs and pubs are nearly unrestricted in their trading hours. Most local residents drink at home or when visiting friends, so bottle shops are popular: these are to be found in all supermarkets including those in local shopping centres. As the larger supermarkets are open every day from early morning to near midnight, running dry is never a problem!

The ACT and Northern Territory are the only jurisdictions in Australia where X rated movies are available legally - state censorship prevents their sale in the rest of Australia. It is, however, legal to sell them by mail order to the rest of Australia, so one of Canberra's major industries is copying and posting naughty videos around Australia. Adult shops selling such movies and, I hear, all manner of other amazing products, are located in the light industrial areas of Fyshwick, Mitchell and Hume. Prostitution (under strict government regulation) also is legal in the ACT in these areas.
