Picture-postcardish and consisting essentially of only one street, Central Tilba is well worth the short detour from the Princes Highway. For some reason, Australia's old dairying villages often seem to have a particular quaintness about them: Central Tilba probably rates higher on the quaintness scale than most. It is listed as a heritage village by the National Trust. Settlement of the area began with a goldmine on Mt Dromedary back in the 1850s. The gold didn't last long, but the area reinvented itself as a dairying town in the 1890s. Although dairying is still important, these days Central Tilba makes itself an attraction for tourists, with a range of art, craft and other special interest shops - and, of course, places for accommodation, food and drink. You will find more details on the buildings and businesses on the village's website of www.tilba.com.au . Central Tilba is an easy drive of under 30 minutes from Bermagui. |

TheWanderingCamel Thu Mar 6, 2008 01:06 UTC Dropping in a again to se if the cheese factory is holding its own. Good to see the family name being used in local landmarks - I must check it out one day. leyle | deecat Tue Feb 19, 2008 17:01 UTC Excellent group of tips. Yea! another cheese factory. What a delightful quaint village. Love the old architecture. Good warning tip. Hope the town continues to survive now that the main road bypasses it. | sue_stone Sat May 19, 2007 09:27 UTC Pretty sure I have driven through Central Tilba back in the old days, but can't say I remember it! | Nemorino Sun Mar 25, 2007 11:29 UTC Glad to hear this picturesque little town is holding its own, and even managing to save the endangered cheese factory. (Hope you had a great birthday yesterday.) |
