A quick overview | 2CV at Place de la Concorde |
How could you not love a city where a bottle of wine is available for the price of a bottle of Coke; where good food is the norm; where even a poor attempt at the local language merits a welcoming smile; and where there are monuments, parks and museums enough to satisfy anyone’s needs? Bienvenu à Paris!
I had been here twice prior to 2006, for shorter visits. On the two most recent visits I was able to immerse myself: and nearly every moment was a delight. If you visit my other pages you will see that usually I am not one for big cities. Paris is a worthy exception.
After four visits, do I know Paris? No – and neither will you, it is too complex a place. Paris has had good times, it has had hard times; it has been occupied by foreign powers; it has risen against kings, governments, and perceived inequity; it has truly been said that "Paris is for lovers". All this underlies the Paris awaiting you.
Would I recommend a visit? Unreservedly. Though I suggest before visiting that you do as much homework as possible. Read up on French (especially Parisian) history – covering over 2000 years. Learn a few French phrases – if only those for the basic courtesies, then use them liberally when you visit. If you follow those few guidelines you also will find yourself immersed and enjoying your stay, which almost certainly will be just your first.
We revisited Paris in June 2007. It was, as always, a delight to be there. This time we spent much of our time catching up with old friends – but we still managed to find time for some sightseeing! |

| | FOOTNOTE: New updates April 2008
On the good advice of Jean-Louis (thank you) I have made some minor corrections; the “General” tips are now in a sequence which I feel places those most important at the start; finally I have added three new tips (at the end of the “Things To Do” section). |

Love some of your detail pics... window boxes as an example. | lynnehamman Wed Jul 29, 2009 01:12 UTC The excellent transport tips here will join the other tips that I have printed for Louise to take with her. Train travel will be her choice, I believe. She also enjoys cycling, however. No parking meters in Paris?? Wow- that good. | aussirose Mon Jul 6, 2009 00:48 UTC Wow, a wealth of info here George!
