the first courtyard of Palazzo Scaglia di Verrua - Torino

the first courtyard of Palazzo Scaglia di Verrua

Trait d’Union: A well hidden gem

It has been a corner stone in the Torino top restaurants (since 1988).
It has reopened just few days ago.

Here in Torino it is quite easy to eat very well. This is another restaurant of this sort.
So nothing to say about the cuisine: as good as the other better Torino restaurants (going deep is a matter of personal taste and preference).
What is peculiar to this one is his location.
Embedded in the heart of Quadrilatero Romano (the most ancient district of Torino), the Trait d'Union is hosted in a charming palace of 16th century: Palazzo Scaglia di Verrua.

The restaurant is well hidden. No neon sign on the street.
You have to book your table. You have to ring at the door bell. You have to enter in the first courtyard. Take your time to say "wow" looking around. You have to ring at another door bell and enter the second courtyard. After the second "wow" the restaurant entrance is on your left.
The inside is total white (as the actual fashion pretends) but is not so cold.

One gossip: the countess of Verrua, who lived in this palace, was the lover of the king Vittorio Amedeo II. It is said that she eventually fleed to Paris once discovered as a spy sent by king Louis XIV.

Favorite Dish: I've tried the fish menu (40 euro) and also the meat menu (35 euro): both very good.
As a minus I can just underscore the slowness of the service.

just for two... - Torino

BABETTE: the coolest Babette's Feast Babette Review

REVIEW
A little more then one year ago, opened this stylish ang sleek restaurant, in the heart of the "City" of Turin (the banks district). Just in front of the monumental Palazzo Lascaris.

As soon as you enter you will understand two things: you are in one of the newest glamour place of Turin, and you will spend a lot (if you wish).

The service is fine and warm, and you feel like entering your club. There are several design-driven seating areas on different levels (I suggest to ask to visit all the rooms).

The downstairs areas are in the basement, under the vault bricks ceiling, and lead to the underground "Tower". This deserve a visit, a perfect and cool design wine cellar. On two level (the lower deep in the "infernotto" a cellar of the 17th century under the basement), severed just by a glass floor, a wooden tower filled of bottles (900) that can drive crazy any wine lover.

At this point in some other place the food goes in background... but not here.

This is one of the place linked to SlowFood association, and put the quality and care of the cuisine in the foreground ever.

For a three course dinner and two wine bottles we spent 147 euro (two people).

Only at lunch you can also have a "cheap" menu (16 euro for 2 course; 19 euro for 3 course; 23 euro for 4 course)

Favorite Dish: What about my eating experience? It has been mixed... not fully satisfying.
I ate a Fois Grais too much rare, and putted over a bread slice that was fat soaked. The Lamb rib was truly good, but I was expecting something more.
The same was for the cuttlefish. The dessert were great.
The proposed wines were superb.

Address: TORINO, VIA ALFIERI 14

Comparison: more expensive than average

Directions: at equal (and short) distance from Piazza San Carlo and Piazza Solferino.
In the front of Palazzo Lascaris.

Torino Macelleria main hall - Torino

Torino Macelleria main hall

MACELLERIA: Fred Flintstone's brontosaurus ribs Macelleria Review

ristorante MACELLERIA review

The name means Butchery, and this is what they promise.
Meat, meat, and meat.
Believe it or not, but in this restaurant you cannot find any pasta dish!
The menu can turn crazy a vegetarian: there are only few dish without meat, but if enter in a Macelleria you have to know what to expect.
The chef dares to present a bit innovative cuisine with the hors d'ouvre, up to you decide if you like it or not.
The main course offers beef and horse meat. The Argentine fillet that I took was excellent (yabba-dabba-do)

The wine list is most red of course, with some "heavy" bottles (in alchol and price).
I checked this on 28 dec. 2005.

Open since May 2005, close to Piazza Vittorio, near many others restaurants and pubs.
The interior are in the now "classic" movida style: clean but cold.

Rosa Rossa vcard - Torino

Rosa Rossa: you can't miss... right on the 45° parallel Rosa Rossa (Moncalieri) Review

Antica Trattoria della ROSA ROSSA review

Situated in a small street near the nice square "Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II", here we have a restaurant with traditional cuisine.
This is an historical place (I remember that it was yet a classic choice when I was in the closest Royal College Carlo Alberto 25 years ago).
If you are visiting this little town close to Turin, this deserve a stop.
And it can be also a cheap experience. On my last visit, we have a one course dinner for two people just for 37 euro.
The quality of the food is great.
