What is Calvi like?

Calvi is what I regard a special town on the northern coast of Corsica. The Citadel is the main attraction of the town and is home to the Foreign Legion. The Citadel is worthy of a visit during the day and night when it is spectacularly lit up. Calvi is a harbour that runs boat services to Italy and France and quite a busy little town.

The restaurants are superb and I can highly recommend the wild boar. Calvi is part new town part old town, and it is the latter that has more to offer with little craft shops and delicatesent shops.

What is there to do?

There are loads of activities available but it can be quite expensive. Helicopter rides, quad bikes, scuba diving, catamorang, windailing and jet skies are just some of the things on offer.

Around the harbour you can easily book up these things or book excursions by boat to various locations around the north part of the Island.

I took a boat ride to Scandola Nature Reserve which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and part of theCorsica Regional Park. On the ride you travel around the northern part of the coastline to the western side and visit the small hamlet of Scandola.

Nightlife is fairly limited, but it's more of a place to go for a walk at night and then a late dinner rather than somewhere vibrant. Calvi itself is quite a relaxed town and is a focal point for the Foriegn Legion and people arriving at the port from mainland France.

Summary of Calvi

Calvi has a great beach and I can highly recommend going swimming down by the rocks at the bottom of the Citadel beyond the harbour, its secluded in places, quite and the sea is amazing to swim in. My only regret is that I didn't buy an underwater camera to take a picture of the brightly coloured fish, mind your feet with the black sea urchins on the rocks though!

I found the people friendly, food brilliant and a great opportunity to see what Corsican life is like and just a great place to relax or venture to other parts of the Island.
