Changzhou, Jiangsu, China Changzhou, nicknamed the Dragon City, is located west by northwest about 2 hours by car from Shanghai and about 5 miles south of the Yangtze river. It has an urban population of 2.17 million. Changzhou started in 221 B.C. as a military command. Changzhou, like many, if not most cities in China, has had other names, but got its current name, meaning “ordinary prefecture”, in 589 A.D. Like most big Chinese cities Changzhou has a fine bus service which is inexpensive. It is a mostly clean modern city. The people are friendly and out going, but westerners are not commonly seen.
Changzhou has a moderate climate in the winter to rather hot in summer. It is a green city compared to some other cities I have been too. I was there in late November and the trees were still green.
The China Grand Canal, the longest in the world at 1,200 miles long and connects Beijing and Hangzhou, runs thru Changzhou . The canal was originally started in about 400 BC and was completed in about 600 AD.
Tianning Temple is located in Changzhou and is not to be missed. It is said to be the high pagoda style structure in the world and is truly impressive. It is still a functioning Zen Buddhist temple.
There are several large and nice parks in the city.

| Where Changzhou is located? |
| | The map I always like to know exactly where places are located. I have always enjoyed looking at maps. So if you are interested in visiting Changzhou, here's a map showing its location to Shanghai and Nanjing. Changzhou is approximately half way between the two. |
| | City parks There are many parks in Changzhou. This one is about a block from both the Phoenix and Trader's Fudu Hotels. I took this photos about 6:30 AM.
Each morning I would go to the park for a walk and every morning there were people exercising or performing group dances using flags, baton and sometimes swords.
Every night there were 100's more doing different dances as one big group.
The largest in Changzhou is Hongmei Park and is not to be missed. It is in the center of the city. Please see my tip for more information. |

| Pros: | "The climate is moderate, the city is green, the canals are scenic and the people seem happy.." | | Cons: | "None - I don't believe in looking for the cons anywhere. If they don't jump up at ya, they aren't worth mentioning." | | In A Nutshell: | "A green city with canals and city parks" |
