Kyoto is the must visit destination in Japan.
For over 1000 years, from 794 to 1868, Kyoto was the imperial capital of Japan. In ancient days, it was also the center of the political government, but Yoritomo moved the political center to Kamakura, and Tokugawa Ieyasu later moved it to Edo.
Kyoto continued as the center of traditional culture, where Nishijin textiles and Kiyomizu pottery is produced, and such historically important sight seeing spots as Higashi Hongan-ji, Nishi Hongan-ji and Chion-in.
It was not bombed during the Second World War, thus the whole city is preserved as it has been for centuries.
Kyoto also is the site of many ancient festivals and rituals, which are held annually.
