City River Scape | Brisbane across the water |
I took this photo on the way to work on the ferry one morning. Brisbane is in the South East corner of Queensland, which is the fastest growing region in Australia. The river meanders and the curves create many areas for housing, aswell as parks, such as Southbank, the botoanical gardens, New Farm Park and Newstead park.
Brisbane was a fairly small town, and it was not until the Commonwealth games in 1982 and then World Expo in 1988 -now the site of Southbank Parklands- that the city began to change and grow. I will always remember being taken to one of the city's first coffee shops in 1989 and thinking that this will never catch on here......Now we see school students wandering to school with a large cup of latte in hand!
The city is a mixture of cultures - Chinatown in the valley, the Irish and Greek clubs, the Asian communities around Darra and Inala etc. There are many typical and topical Australian pubs, such as the Pineapple, the Norman the Brekky Creek and to me the most famous of all, the cattlemans bar at the Ekka, which only opens for 2 weeks of the year - at least that is my opinion. |
| | Brisbane at Night From Southbank The Brisbane River is so attractive - and, never more so than at night with the lights from the city reflecting off it. A favourite getaway for us to a few nights at Rydges Hotel at Southbank - with a view of the river, just like this. The parklands are a lovely recreational place for families and people of all ages - you can go there and spend no money at all, with a picnic lunch and look forward to a swim, meet friends for lunch at one of the many restaurants along the walkway, enjoy takeaway, wander through the markets on Friday night and the weekends.....wander across the bridge to the city......and book a show at the theatre at night. The museum, art gallery and libraries are all over here - and its an easy place to spend a few days, with as little or much to do as you please. |
| The meanderings of it all |
| | The Meanders of the Brisbane River Brisbane is such a sprawling city now - to Ipswich in the West - the fringe of the city is so close to the north and Gold Coasts at the north and south, and it just seems to keep on growing!
Brisbane can be too often overlooked by overseas travellers - and is almost never known when we travel - usual question is "are you from Sydney or Melbourne?"!! |

| Pros: | "Close to bush, beach, reef and rainforest regions" | | Cons: | "If you don't like really hot summers - avoid summer here!" | | In A Nutshell: | "As the saying so "Beautfiul one day - perfect the next"!" |
