This is really a sight for sad eyes

The bridge............

Old bridge materials
As an Australian, visiting the famous Bridge Over the River Kwai was a must-do when visiting Thailand. This was the first time I had ever been somewhere of war signficance to Australia - and alliances with other members of the international community.

The new bridge stands as testament to the work and suffering of our soldiers all those years ago - and this portion has been rebuilt in the museum from old materials.
Graves - lovingly attended

In a word - respect

When we first visited Kanchanaburi, it was so hot and dry everywhere - and then, behold, a veritable oasis! This cemetery is always so well tended, always green, clipped and absolutely free of any form of rubbish, defacement or acts of disrespect, unfortunately so common in the West. I felt quite overwhelmed when we first came here. Distant relative was here - and found the graves of soldiers from my hometown and current home. How important this sight must be to the families of the men buried here and the suriviing diggers - especially maintained to this beautiful standard, so far from home.
Defintely not star rated accommodation

War museum.............

These huts have been recreated in the same way they were built as minimalist shelter for the prisoners of war. Not a slick or modern museum - but a sad wander through the drawings and writings of the solders. The pictures depict the sad conditions - the illness, sadness, cruelty inflicted by the captors and the endless hard work - and also the mateship amongt the men.
