Vestmanna takes its name from Old Norse Vestmaðr (pl. Vestmenn), which means „man from the west", i. e. from Ireland or the Western Isles. In Iceland we have the Vestmanna islands. We are told that some Irish slaves (Vestmenn) fled to the islands from their masters on the mainland. Austmaðr (pl. Austmenn) means „man from the east“, i. e. from Norway. Vestmanna in the Faeroe Islands could have been a place where Irish monks settled before the Vikings came. But „Vestmenn“ were not all Irish. Some of them were of Nordic origin, Viking settlers from Ireland, Scotland, the Orkneys, and the Western Isles. Vestmanna is the largest settlement on Streymoy. For a while all the traffic from Vágar airport on Vágoy went through Vestmanna, but not any more since an underwater tunnel now connects the two islands. People in Vestmanna mainly live by the fishing-industry and tourism. Popular with tourists and bird-watchers are the steep cliffs and grottos of Vestmannabjørgini whereto boat trips are arranged from Vestmanna. |
