Melník

by Bjorgvin - last update: Aug 14, 2003

Labe and Vltava coming together.

Above the confluence of the Labe (Elbe) and Vltava (Moldau) rivers hovers the castle and town of Melník. In the 5th and 6th century many Slavonic tribes lived in the area. The Pšovan tribe settled in Melník (then called Psov). Of this tribe was a princess named Ludmila, who married a Bohemian prince. In 1274 Melník gained a town status by royal decree and later it became a royal town, which belonged to the Bohemians queens, usually given to them as a dowry. An early Gothic castle, which became a royal castle, was built upon an old Slavonic fortified settlement. It was expanded twice between 1400 and 1480, and rebuilt as a renaissance chateau in 1553. The Lobkowicz family came into possession of the castle in 1753, but in 1948 it was confiscated by the state. In 1991 the estate was returned to its former owners and it is currently in their hands.
