| | The city of Plzen (Ger. Pilsen) lies in the Plzen Basin where four rivers (the Mze, Radbuza, Uhlava and Uslava) meet. The trade route between Prague and Bavaria has long been a busy one, and Plzen was first recorded in the 10th century. It was chartered in 1292, and fortified in 1295 by Wenceslas II (r. 1278-1305) king of Bohemia. In the 19th century Plzen became a major industry centre, being near rich coalfields and iron-ore deposits. This is symbolized by the Skoda Works, which occupy most of the city. The city is the transportation centre and the economic and cultural centre of western Bohemia. info.plzen-city.cz |
