Bl?ndu?s (Blanda?s Estuary) in central northern Iceland is a town of around 1000 inhabitants, the largest town in the area; it lies at the estuary of Blanda River where it joins the Hunafloi Bay. The Blanda River splits the town into two halves. Highway no. 1 runs through the outskirts of town, and the distance from Reykjavik is approx. 280km. The Blanda River estuary was well suited as a landing place for the old Viking ships and many of the first settlers in the area took land here. It is also a well-documented fact that Bl?ndu?s was a trading place in the first ages of settlement in Iceland and an operating base for Icelandic and Norwegian traders. Later on with new types of ships the more northerly harbour at Skagastr?nd became more convenient as it is the best natural harbour in the area. However, Bl?ndu?s has been an officially licensed trading centre since 1876. The main occupation now is commerce, industry and various services for the surrounding agricultural area and tourists.
