Eyrarbakki Travel Guide: 6 reviews and 11 photos

The south coast village of Eyrarbakki is of historic significance because it was for centuries the main port in the region, and a trading center for the whole of the southern region. But the place lost its importance as a trading center in the early 20th century, partly because the natural harbor conditions were not good and partly because modern road communications were not good enough at the time. For centuries trade and fishing were the main occupations in Eyrarbakki and the fishing industry still is one of the sources of employment, but so is small industry and, increasingly, tourism. Eyrarbakki was in the 19th century a cultural center as well. The primary school there, established in 1852, is the oldest in the country.

A charming little town. We stopped briefly on our south shore excursion.
