The village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur (often abbreviated to 'Klaustur') has a long and interesting history. Irish heremits, 'Papar', are believed to have lived at Kirkjubær before the Norse settlement of Iceland. Later it became the home of the local magnate, but in 1186 a Benedictine convent (klaustur meaning convent in icelandic) was founded at Kirkjubær. The convent was disbanded at the time of the Lutheran reformation in 1550. Many local placenames and folk tales reflect the presence of the nuns and ecclesiastical history down the centuries. This place is widely praised for it's natural beauty. - Southern Iceland. The distance from Reykjavik is 258km, from Vik 71km, from Hofn 201km.

I took a bus tour from Reykyavik several years ago in November--very cold, very beautiful. Your pages make me see how much I didn't get to see.
