Wonderful, Wonderful Copenhagen.

by Bjorgvin - last update: Jul 24, 2007

Copenhagen (København, Icel. Kaupmannahöfn) is the capital and largest city of Denmark. It is located on the islands of Zealand (Sjælland, Icel. Sjáland) and Amager (Amákur). A small village existed there by the early 10th century, but in 1167 the powerful Bishop Absalon, adviser of king Valdemar I, built a castle on the islet of Slotsholmen (Castle Islet) and fortified the town. In 1445 Copenhagen became the capital of Denmark and the residence of the royal family. During the late 16th century Copenhagen's trade began to flourish, and many of its great building are from that time, such as the Exchange (Børsen), Holmens Church, Trinitatis Church, with the adjacent Round Tower, and the palace of Rosenborg. Fires in 1728 and 1795 destroyed many houses and buildings, and in the Napoleonic Wars the British bombarded the city (1807) and caused much damage. With the Kalmar Union instigated by queen Margaret I in 1397, when Denmark, Norway (until 1814) and Sweden (until 1523) were united, Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands as personal “tax lands” of the Norwegian crown went to the Danish crown never to be returned, and Copenhagen became the capital of Iceland as well in 1445. It remained so until 1904, when Iceland acquired home rule later (1918) to become a separate state under the Danish crown, with only foreign affairs remaining under Danish control. Reykjavik was the seat of the Icelandic government from 1904, but the ties with Denmark and Copenhagen were not completely severed until Iceland became a republic in 1944.
