| | Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, founded in 1726, was during its early years mostly a Spanish garrison town and its role was to stem the Portuguese advance into the area from Brazil. It is interesting that many of the early inhabitants came from the Canary Islands. From 1807 to 1830 foreign forces occupied Montevideo and its trade and population declined. Independence (1830) did not bring stability at first, but around the middle of the 18th century the city was flourishing and became the major port of the Río de la Plata and the country's natural trading centre. Now the port of Montevideo handles most of Uruguay's foreign trade, the chief exports being wool, meat, and hides. Higher education in Uruguay is available only in the capital.
