| | The capital of Chile was founded in 1541 by the Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia. It is situated in a closed valley surrounded by mountains of the Andes and the Coast. At first its growth was slow, but the city was named the republic's capital in 1818, after the wars of independence, and thereafter wealth flowed into it. Today Santiago is a vibrant cosmopolitan city, famous for its architecture (new and old), parks, walkways, plazas, and pedestrian streets.
