TRANSLATION: The City of Gods, the Great City, the Residence of the Emerald Buddha, the Impregnable City (of Ayutthaya) of God Indra, the Grand Capital of the World Endowed with Nine Precious Gems, the Happy City Abounding in Enormous Royal Palaces Which Resemble the Heavenly Abode Wherein Dwell the Reincarnated Gods, a City Given by Indra and Built by Vishnukarm.
The capital of Thailand is located on the delta of the Chao Phraya River. It was formerly divided into two cities (Krung Thep on the east bank and Thon Buri on the west). The name Bangkok, used commonly by foreigners, derived from “bang makok” (the village of wild plums). The Thais call the city Krung Thep (the city of gods). Bangkok became the capital of Thailand in 1782 when Rama I of the ruling Chakri dynasty came to the throne and moved his court to the east bank of the river. The city has since then been Thailand's cultural and commercial centre and its only cosmopolitan city. http://www.bangkoksite.com; |
