Where the fun never sets

Bandera, Texas: Where the fun never sets. That's how Pat Breedlove, recent recipient of Bandera Regional County Foundation's Volunteer of the Year Award, describes our little town. The sign professes 957 residents. But personalities are so big it feels like more.

Hunters Bar-B-Que and Outdoor Expo: Nov. 4

November 4th, the Friday before the Saturday that ushers in hunting season with a bang, we staged the 43rd annual Chamber of Commerce fundraiser. Dusty Britches and the Rhythm Ranchhands entertained the record crowd for hours. Check Jessica and James's fabulous photos at www.banderbulletin.com.

As Bandera County Coordinator of the Kinky Friedman for Governor 2006 Campaign, I organized the world's greatest volunteers at a booth where folks could pledge to save their votes for Kinky, buy bumper stickers or t-shirts or buttons, and meet the Kinkster.

To get on the ballot, Kinky needs 45, 539 registered voters who don't vote in next year's primary to sign petitions in a 30- or 60-day period after the March 8 primary date. As for being governor, Kinky says, How hard can it be?

Bandera Music Hall of Fame at the Library

We recently inducted local businessman/musician Arkey Blue into the Bandera Music Hall of Fame. Our library features a computerized archive of about 700 songs recorded by Bandera County musicians. These include Arkey Blue and the Blue Cowboys, the Almost Patsy Cline Band, the aforementioned Dusty Britches, Robert Earl Keen, the Dixie Chicks, Charlie and Bruce Robison, Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys, the McKay Brothers, Larry Nolen, Rudy Robbins, Gary Wright and the Roadkill Band, Reuben Darnell, Dustin Lowe, and on and on and on.

People from all over the world come to Bandera to open the red door on Main Street at Arkey Blue's Silver Dollar, walk down the stairs, and two-step to live music on the sawdust-covered floor .
