The history of the city began at the hill of Schlossberg. In III century Romans have chosen this hill for erection of the strengthening. This rocky hill occupies favorable position above the Lech River and by its nature it is as though intended for construction of a fortress or a castle on it.
As Fuessen is situated on the well-known Emperor August-road from Rome to northern German grounds of the great Roman Empire the construction of the fortress was caused by necessity of protection this road from attacks of barbarians.

The construction of the Castle started in 1291 and finished in 1504. The Castle has late Gothic appearance. It was required more than two centuries to finish construction of this Castle at the top of the hill of Schlossberg. The "Hohes Schloß" - once the domicile of the Augsburg Archbishops - stands sentinel above the historic town of Füssen. It’s idyllically situated in the Alpine foothills.
The "Hohes Schloss" (High Castle) is one of Swabia's largest and best preserved late Gothic castle complexes. One hall of the Castle is used as a concert hall, a collection of late Gothic paintings and sculptures are exposed in other halls.

Things To Do: The courtyard

The courtyard of the castle represents the square of the wrong quadrangular form paved by a cobble-stone. For the first time having appeared in this closed space, I don’t understand at once that walls of a building are ornamented.
Firstly it seemed to me, that the building has very rich architectural decor - the numerous bay windows, rich platbands, lattices and frames. However, having looked narrowly, I noticed, that the most part of a magnificent decor was simply painted.
As it has appeared, the Painted façade of the castle is a masterpiece which is more than 500 years old! The Painted facade of the courtyard was finished in 1499. It is unique and charming.

The Benedictine monastery carrying the name of the buried in it St. Mang is considered the oldest kept construction of the city. This baroque complex of the former Benedictine monastery of St. Mang is situated below the Hohes Schloss. Its history goes back to the IX-th century.
St. Mang was the missionary who came from Sanct-Gallen and lived in Fuessen 26 years till his death in 773. He was engaged here religious and public work and made a lot of useful to this territory. He penetrated into all affairs, even learned local residents to obtain minerals.
The building of the monastery started in the ninth century around the monkish cell of St. Magnus. The Castle Hohes Schloss is a short uphill walk from St. Mang. The present baroque style of the monastery was added in the eighteenth century.

The building of Franciscan church is very much in harmony with an architectural ensemble of the Castle. Monastery St. Mang (XII century) within centuries has undergone many changes in the architectural relation.
In the beginning of the XVIII century architect Jacob Herkomer conceived to construct here the church on the sample of the Italian baroque. Stiftskirche St. Magnus is the largest and most impressive of the numerous baroque churches in Füssen's Old Town.

The internal furniture of the church is superb! There is Romance crypt of the IX century under the main altar, decorated by frescos of the X century. They are the most ancient frescos in Bavaria.
Füssen has Saint Mang (Magnus of Füssen) as its Patron Saint. He is buried in the crypt of the St. Mang. His staff and other relics hang above the main altar. St. Mang's Feast Day is 6 September. The church offers a number of St. Magnus relics, a crypt fresco dating from 980 (Reichenau School), and fine alter figures.

Things To Do: Heilig-Geist-Spitalkirche
|
Tip Rating: |

|
Opposite to the monastery there is small, but appreciable owing to an unusual and magnificent decor the Hospital church (Heilig-Geist-Spitalkirche). It was constructed in style of rococo in the XVIII century on a place of the burned down Gothic church.
The richly decorated rococo façade of the Holy Ghost Hospital Church depicts St Florian as a help in preventing fires (the previously gothic church was burnt down in 1733) and St Christopher, who, as the patron saint of raftsmen, has his appropriate place here on the mighty River Lech.
Internal furniture of the church is not less rich, than external. The hospital church is above the Lech river.

Things To Do: Old Town

Tip Rating: |

The ambience of the Old Town is unique. Different historical epochs meet in a harmonious ensemble, invites you to go on journeys of discovery into the past but also to take a leisurely stroll through the shops.
Historical patricians’ houses of the Reichenstrasse represent the special interest. They are huddling side by side, line the main shopping street in the pedestrian precinct, which is identical with the route of the earlier Roman road Via Claudia Augusta.
What a pleasure to walk over the labyrinth of its medieval streets! Streets of the old town are fine! We felt ourselves as in a children's fairy tale when walked around the old town.

JLBG Thu Jul 23, 2009 21:02 UTC This little town is a wealth of wonders! I would not love rococo and baroque at home but for a visit, it is always wonderful. The Alte Stadtapotheke is superb.
