Church of the Nativity

The Church of the Nativity was initially constructed in 1696 at a place where a wooden church existed since Ivan Grozny time. A small church was later rebuilt in Pseudo Russian style in 1847 on money of merchant Baranov. Unfortunately the Bell Tower hasn’t survived. The Church was closed in 1929 and reopened in 1990.

Pond and the Seraya River

The Seraya (Grey) River is running through Alexandrov to Kliazma, then to Oka, then to Volga.

I was told by a local that the decision on clearing of the Seraya River which proceeds through the city near to memorial estate "Alexandrovskaya Sloboda" was accepted long time ago. The river became an original sight. But as money from the city budget for this purpose all the same would not suffice, the modern course has been selected - to get in the federal program, to receive constant financing. Let’s wait a little - may be the money will come and the river becomes cleaner.

Walk around monastery's walls

Don’t limit yourself with watching the Monastery inside. Have a walk around its walls outside and you’ll see typical Russian landscapes with fortress walls (photo 1) on the background. You’ll see a neglected pond (photo 2) and a church (photo 3,4,5) which needs an urgent renovation.

Lenin’s Monument

The monument was created in 1967 when the 50th anniversary of the Great October revolution was celebrating in the USSR. Sculptor U.Neroda and architect A.Dushkin are the authors.

Merchant Pervushin's Estate

If you walk up Sovetskaya Street you will find the Merchant Pervushin's Estate. As long-expected guests you will be invited into the old merchant's house to visit merchant Pervushin.

Museum specialists are working on the idea of the revival of traditions, history and life of provincial merchants. With this aim theatre programs have been worked out: "A visit to merchant Pervushin", "A merchant has returned from the fair". They let us look in the XIX century and be participants of the events, taking place in the estate.

Historic House and Obelisk

When I walked along Oktiabr’skaya Street close to the railway station I saw a historic house of red brick (photo 1) with many memorial boards at its walls.
Just at the front of the building there is another monument (obelisk) devoted to the WWII memory (photo 2).

Church of St.Serafim Sarovsky

This church was one of the first in Russia which had St.Serafim as a Patron Saint. It was built on donations of citizens of Alexandrov and travelers by Moscow Railways. In 1928 the church was closed and nearly completely destroyed.

On September 1, 2003 the building of the church was finally transferred to Vladimir eparchy. Currently the church is under renovation. Your support would be highly appreciated.

Chapel on memory of Alexander’s III

Savva Mamontov – a well-known Russian merchant redeemed in 1889 a site of the ground near the railway station to build a small stone chapel with an iconostasis in it in memory of wonderful rescue of the family of tsar Alexander III at wreck of a train in Borki. Not far ago this chapel was reopened again.

Monument to the lost soldiers

The monument to the lost in WWII soldiers was erected on the railway station square in 1978 when the 200th anniversary of the city was celebrated. B. Jakovlev is an author of this monument. The monument is made of copper and stands on the pedestal of granite.

Alexandrov railway station

In 1870 the movement by rail from Moscow to Yaroslavl through Alexandrov was opened. Alexander's railway station was placed on the end of an axis of the main street of the city. Constructed here in the beginning of the XXth century the station which has kept up till now.

In 1874 the new plan of the city was adopted. It is possible to assume, that architect N.A.Artleben was its author. The project provided the further development of the city aside railway station on the basis of the regular plan. In 1903 the stone building of station entered into an architectural ensemble of station of Alexandrov. It became one of the most representative public buildings of the city in which eclectic forms of classicism prevail.
