Things To Do: Trinity Cathedral
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Trinity Cathedral was constructed in 1422 – 1423 to replace the wooden Trinity Church built by the Monastery founder Sergius of Radonezh. The Cathedral became a compositional center for the subsequently developing Monastery ensemble.
The walls made of blocks of white stone are unusually inclined towards the center enchanting the Cathedral monumentality, stability and uprising character.

In 1458 the brick church - Nikon Chapel was constructed over the tomb of Sergius's successor Nikon buried at the southern wall of the Trinity Cathedral.

Things To Do: Church of the Holy Ghost
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Church of the Holy Spirit was constructed in 1476 – 1477 by master-builders from Pskov, invited for the construction work in the Moscow Kremlin. They erected a new single-domed church, dedicated to the Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles. Under the dome of the church the builders placed an open belfry.

The church of the Holy Spirit and the Trinity Cathedral form an ensemble. In the church there are two shrines with the holy relics of St. Maximus the Greek. The Church of the Holy Ghost is a very shapely, light building of graceful proportions. The bells are suspended in the open arches. The drum with high windows open inside the cupola is a kind of sound resonator.

  • After the end of the wars against Tartars and the victory over the kingdoms of Kazan and Astrakhan , the tsar began building a large and beautiful church, dedcated to the Dormition of the Mother of God, a copy of the Kremlin Dormition Cathedral. The walls, the pillars and the vaults are covered with frescoes on the subjects of Church History.

Most of the wall frescoes are dedicated to the Dormition of the Holy Virgin. On the pillars there are images of the most highly venerated saints of the Orthodox Church.

    Things To Do: Refectory
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Refectory was erected by order of Peter I in 1686–1692. The building of Moscow baroque style is 85 m long. The large hall of the Refectory covered with a vault without supporting pillars was used for gala receptions. At the end of the 17th century it was the largest hall in Russia. Its floor square is 510 sq. m.

Open galleries run along its perimeter, with long flights of steps leading up to these galleries. The church building catches the eye with the four-color design of its façade, creating the illusion of faceted relief-work, as well as with the richness of its elaborate colorful stucco and carvings. They make a perfect match for the architecture of the Refectory.

The walls of the Refectory were painted and renovated several times. For the last time the church was painted in 1911.

You may watch my high resolution photo of the Refectory on the Google Earth according to the following coordinates or 56º 18' 35.00" N 38º 7' 48.56" E on my Google Earth Panoramio Refectory 1 or Refectory 2 and Refectory 3.

Things To Do: Church of St. Mica
  • Tip Rating:
  • A small church, which looks like a gem, was constructed in 1734. People connect it with the name of St. Mica, as the church stands above his grave. On the commemoration day of St. Mica a Liturgy is celebrated here.

The veneration of the Mother of God was central in the life of St. Sergius. Every night he sang hymns in honor of the Holy Virgin, and at the end of his life, he and his disciple St. Mica had a privilege of Her visit. She came to his cell with the apostles Peter and John by her side. The Holy Virgin promised to protect the monastery and to watch over it.

    Things To Do: Tsar Chambers
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Tsar Chambers were built in late 17th century. By its outside appearance the edifice matches the Refectory Church. It was used by pilgrims from the Royal family. In the 18th century the vaults of the Chambers were decorated with fine stucco and carvings.

The Theological Academy was transferred from Moscow to the Lavra, and a new complex of buildings for the needs of the Schools appeared. At present the Tsar’s Chambers belong to the Academy.

The Church Archaeological Museum and the Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin are situated in the Tsar’s Chambers. The wall paintings were created in 1987–1988 by the iconographers of the local Icon Painting School.

  • Tip Rating:
  • The Bell Tower was erected in 1740–1770. It was designed by the architects Shumakher and Ukhtomsky, and it’s one of the tallest in Russia. It replaced the bell tower of the 17th century. Its 5 tiers together with the cross are 88 m tall.

The Bell Tower is built of brick and plastered, the details - cartouches, columns - are of white stone. Its heaviest bell weighed 65 tons. The choice of the bells by their tone and sound was considered to be superb. Before the revolution there were 42 bells. The clock with chimes was installed in 1905.

Oh Sergey, this is your best page in my opinion!! Your choice of music is exceptional and I am sitting here in tears because it is so deep, so good! And I like Moscow baroque more than "our" baroque.
