The Church of the Holy Spirit was constructed in 1476 – 1477 by master-builders from Pskov, invited for the construction work in the Moscow Kremlin. They erected a new single-domed church, dedicated to the Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles. Under the dome of the church the builders placed an open belfry.
The church of the Holy Spirit and the Trinity Cathedral form an ensemble. In the church there are two shrines with the holy relics of St. Maximus the Greek. The Church of the Holy Ghost is a very shapely, light building of graceful proportions. The bells are suspended in the open arches. The drum with high windows open inside the cupola is a kind of sound resonator.

The Refectory was erected by order of Peter I in 1686–1692. The building of Moscow baroque style is 85 m long. The large hall of the Refectory covered with a vault without supporting pillars was used for gala receptions. At the end of the 17th century it was the largest hall in Russia. Its floor square is 510 sq. m.
Open galleries run along its perimeter, with long flights of steps leading up to these galleries. The church building catches the eye with the four-color design of its façade, creating the illusion of faceted relief-work, as well as with the richness of its elaborate colorful stucco and carvings. They make a perfect match for the architecture of the Refectory.
The walls of the Refectory were painted and renovated several times. For the last time the church was painted in 1911.
