"From Denmark to Germany by car" Puttgarden by Kuznetsov_Sergey

Puttgarden Travel Guide: 7 reviews and 24 photos

Puttgarden is a ferry harbour on the German island of Fehmarn. It lies on an important route between Germany and Denmark known as the Vogelfluglinie which crosses the 18 km strait, the Fehmarnbelt, to Rødby on the island of Lolland.

Fehmarn (Danish, Femern) is an island and - since 2003 - a town on this island in the Baltic Sea, off the eastern coast of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, and ca. 18 kilometers south of the Danish island of Lolland. It belongs to the district of Ostholstein. The area is 185 km² and the coastline is 78 km.

Fehmarn is an island in the western part of the Baltic sea, between the Kiel bay and the Mecklenburg bay.
It is separated from the continent by the Femarnzund (width about 1 km) through which the bridge is thrown. The Danish island Lolland is connected with the German island Fehmarn by the ferry. There are extensive sandy beaches. It's famous by summer sea resorts.

From other sights it is necessary to note a reserve of birds. They nest in a shallow-lake western part of the island. Fehmarn lays just along the line of bird's flights from the north of European and Siberian parts of the continent to the south.

During the travel from Russia to Germany through Scandinavia we have passed by three bridges through the sea straits. The first bridge - the Oresund bridge.
The second bridge - through the strait between the Danish islands Zealand and Falster.

Finally - the third bridge - between the Fehmarn island and the continental part of Germany. It seemed to us that all the bridges have a similar design. Each bridge causes admiration. Passing by car above the sea surface you have special feelings of the superiority over water and the gratitude to engineers - designers who created this miracle.

Hi Sergey, I enjoyed your tips & travelogue because I took this ferry just this afternoon -- but of course without a car. I was on a EuroCity train from Copenhagen to Hamburg, and they drove the train onto the ferry in Rodby and off again in Puttgarden.

As you say, the sea is always beautiful. The bridges you had to cross over were very impressive. Thanks for the history of the area.

Very interesting information both on the bloody past and future (bridge over the Fehmarn Belt). Once, on the way to Osla, I drove this way and took a ferry.

Enjoyed the bridge triology since I've read your pages on the other two. Great transportation tips. As usual, I always like the historic information, too. Oops! almost forgot to say, "Good work on the travelogue"

Yes, funny indeed that I was long time the only one going this route. Let´s see when the 3rd one will appear! By the way, the views are not always so beautiful, I mean when it's stormy and raining ice or snow.

These gigantic bridges are really interesting and sometimes not easy to drive over, when the wind is strong and you really have to concentrate not to be blown away...
