Things To Do: Temple of Aphaia
  • Tip Rating:
  • Lying 12 kilometres east of Aegina Town among dense pine trees, the Temple of Aphaia is a magnificent Doric temple. It is one of the most beautiful classical temples in Greece and also the oldest surviving.

It stands on a circa 160 m peak on the eastern side of the island. The first temple on the site (700 BC) was dedicated to Afaia, a deity from Crete.

The remains of the destroyed temple were removed from the site of the new temple and used to fill a circa 40 by 80 m terrace within the overall sanctuary of circa 80 by 80 m. This new temple terrace was aligned on north, west, and south with the plan of the new temple.

The temple was a hexastyle peripteral Doric order structure on a 6 by 12 column plan resting on a 15.5 by 30.5 m platform.
A small museum is open on the site.

Things To Do: Town Village Aegina
  • Tip Rating:
  • Aegina Town is the capital and main port of the island.
It is a lovely little town, with beautiful neoclassical buildings of different bright colors, narrow streets, picturesque cafes, nice squares and a lovely port where tiny colored fishing boats are mooring.

The whole town is an explosion of colors, accentuated by the colorful pistachio nuts sold everywhere.

Things To Do: Metropolis old temple of Virgin Mary
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Metropolis old temple of Virgin Mary is one that nearly all visitors to Aegina will see from a distance arriving to the port of Aegina. It is located at the centre of the main port of Aegina.

It was here where the first Greek government took their oath.

  • When arriving by sea closer to the port the second thing you see (after the Metropolis old temple of Virgin Mary) is the small and picturesque church of Aghios Nikolaos of the XIV-th century, which is in the middle of the harbor surrounded by ships.

Located in the port of the capital of Aegina, the little church of Agios Nikolaos is a lovely whitewashed church, with a white dome, proudly standing at the tip of the port. It has extremely simple architecture, with spare, linear lines. In its tiny interior, the church houses beautiful golden icons and various valuable items as well as fine wall paintings.

  • Coming from the capital of the island, the monastery is located opposite the mountain of Paleochora (Old village), where the old capital used to be.

The monastery was built between 1904 and 1910 by a monk, Nektarios, who was one of the latest canonized people of the Greek Orthodox Church. Saint Nektarios, the patron of the island, has been buried in the monastery and is said to have healing powers and to be miraculous. His relics are preserved in the first chapel of the Agia Triada (Holy Trinity) Monastery, next to the church. "Agios Nektarios".

The main church located on front of the monastery is a newly built huge bronze and white church, one of the largest places of Orthodox worship in the Balkans, constructed in honor of Saint Nektarios.
