Things To Do: Poros Clocktower
  • Tip Rating:
  • The landscape of the Poros Island is very hilly and mountainous. The highest peak is the Vigla (about 360 m) in the west-central part of Kalavria.

At the top of the highest hill of Sferia where Poros town is situated you can see the clock tower and that is the symbol for Poros town. It was built in 1927 and was completely restored in 2002.

The Clocktower is imposing from the distance on the highest top of the hill, among prickly pears and pine trees. It is visible from every part and it is the jewel of the town.

Though the Tower has very simple appearance when you watch it closer after 10 minutes going upstairs it really worth visiting because the view from here is wonderful.

You may watch my high resolution photo of Poros Clock-tower on Google Earth according to the following coordinates 37º 29' 53.10" N 23º 27' 11.34" E
or on my Google Earth Panoramio Photo 1, Photo 2.

    Things To Do: Poros Corniche
  • Tip Rating:
  • Poros means "crossing", and it is from this that the whole island takes its name. On the edge of this crossing, built in amphitheater form on the slopes of a hill, is the cheerful island town which is the port of Poros and the island's most important settlement.

The town of Poros is a beautiful and picturesque place with neoclassical buildings built amphitheatrically on the slopes of a hill. The clock tower is its most famous landmark. Take a walk to the clock-tower, the town's highest point and the island's "trademark" and enjoy the views which open from there.

Along the pier, the visitor sees plenty of cafeterias, restaurants, tourist shops, many bars and discos with Greek music. There are many little taverns spread among the pictures - due backstreets of Poros.

You may watch my 1 min 24 sec VIDEO-Clip Greece Poros Island Cruise from my YouTube channel with the popular Antique "Dinata Dinata" song.

  • At the center of the town you can find the Archaeological Museum. It is situated at the Korizis Square and holds items from the Sanctuary of Poseidon, as well as other pieces from sites nearby.

The museum was constructed in the 1960's, in a plot donated by the Koryzis family. The building cannot be extended, unless the Greek State purchases the plot next to the museum.
The museum contains collections of finds from the excavations of the sanctuary of Poseidon at Kalavreia, finds from the excavations of the French Archaeological School in Troezena, collections of funerary stelae, ancient inscriptions and Geometric pottery from Troezena, ancient inscriptions and Hellenistic figurines from Methana and collection of finds from the old excavations at Hermione, including pottery, bronze vessels and figurines.

What a beautiful island :-)) I could go there immediately and spend some time out :-)) The videos are wonderful, although youtube seems to have much traffic now and I need to come back later to watch your transport one.

Each Greek island has its own character and no one is like the other. In Poros, the rhythm of a flocks of tourists flooding the island for a few hours and leaving must build a special atmosphere!

such a nice looking island - and probably superb after the dayboats leave. What a pity to have only an hour for such a beautiful place. N.
