General Tips: The Bavarian, Lechtal and Allgau Alps

Favorite Thing: Bavarian, Lechtal and Allgau Alps form a magnificent panorama with the meadows of Schwangau. The Tegelberg (1880 m), the Hoher Stranssberg (1934 m) and the Schlagstein (1679 m) towers from the east. The Kitzberg (1123 m) and the Kienberg (996 m) - from the south. The Forgensee is to the west and the Bannwaldsee - to the north.
It is a region of castles, mountains and lakes, the most beautiful corner of East Allgau. The two world-famous royal castles are enthroned on their rocky outcrops as if they had grown there: Neuschwanstein bold and unreal, Hohenschwangau romantic and friendly.

Favorite Thing: The Forggensee is an artificial lake named after the part of Schwangau (Forggen). The Lech-river had to be flooded to build this lake.
The Lake Forggensee with an area of 16 square kilometers is a paradise for water sport enthusiasts, unspoilt by buildings and freely accessible almost all the way round.

Favorite Thing: Schwangau means "Swan Country", and the presence of a sizeable colony of these aloof birds has cast a spell on rulers of the area down the centuries.
As the decoration of their fantasy castles testifies, the nineteenth-century Bavarian kings Maximilian II and his son Ludwig II were obsessed by the swan motif and the medieval Grail legends associated with it.
King Ludwig II recalled his line of descent and celebrated the arrival of the legendary knight on the shores of the Alpsee and united two figures into one: Driant, the Knight of the Swan, and Lohengrin, also a knight of the swan.
