Area to the West from Puerta del Sol is named "the Austrian Madrid" or " Madrid of Gabsburg". This austrian dinasty ruled Spain up to 1700. Phillip V Burbon ascended a throne this year. Plaza Mayor has been planned under the order of Phillip III Gabsburg. The horse monument of the monarch is installed in the center of the square. The name "main" Plaza Mayor received in the beginning of XVI century after the square Arrabel reorganization which was there before. Then the roadway was paved by a stone and three-tier houses with arcades were constructed. In 1620 this big square was opened. In 1853 the square was reconstructed by the architect de Vilja Nueva.

The famous Guernica by Picasso was there untul 1992 when it was moved to Arte Reina Sofía despite Picasso's will it to be displayed in Prado. | barryg23 Fri Feb 23, 2007 21:56 UTC Excellent page on Madrid. We had a great time here last summer. Heat was a bit unbearable but otherwise great. I think April might well be a nicer time to visit. | deecat Sat Feb 10, 2007 01:56 UTC Comprehensive and educational presentation of wonderful Madrid. I, too, enjoyed the architecture, history, and beauty of this lovely Spanish city. Outstanding photographs. |
