| Kronborg Castle - outside |

To the north from Copenhagen on to edge of the cape acting directly in the Oresund strait, there is the huge castle Kronborg, whose graceful, covered by copper towers sharply differ from its massive strengthenings.
It seems, that the centuries-old history of the castle is full of contradictions as well. Once there was a royal residence, then - a military garrison, and now - a museum is placed there. However Kronborg became famous first of all owing to two legendary characters. |

First of them - Hamlet, the prince of Denmark, the hero of the play of William Shakespeare. Its action is developed in Kronborg though the author called it Helsingor - the name of city which is located at walls of the castle.
The second legendary hero - Holger the Dane, one of the 12 palladines of the famous emperor Charles the Great (742-814). Like the English king Arthur, Holger didn't die, and, according to the legend, he sleeps, but will wake up to protect the native land if it is necessary.

lynnehamman Thu Jun 11, 2009 08:24 UTC Your theories on Shakespeare are interesting (if controversial). Holger the Dane sounds like a formidable bloke.Good photos of the castle. That is King James of Scotland. | scottishvisitor Sat Nov 24, 2007 16:18 UTC Nice look down Kronborg history :) I don't recall Scotland having a King Jacob but think you mean James! | JLBG Wed Oct 31, 2007 21:51 UTC Then the kings of Denmark were toll keepers! The princes of Savoie were toll keeper too, for the Alps! Actually toll keeper has always been a good job! | LoriPori Mon Sep 3, 2007 10:48 UTC I love castles and the mighty Kronborg Castle sure impresses. Enjoyed the history of the castle and the story of Holger the Dane. Also thanks Sergey for checking out my Marseille & St. Lucia Estuary pages. |
