In Gallo-Roman days, Nimes was fed by an immense aqueduct, nearly 50 km long, which brought water from the springs of the Eure and the Airan, near Uzes, to the castellum divisiorum discovered in 1844 in the Rue de la Lampeze.
The track of the Nimes aqueduct was easily reconstituted thanks to the parts remaining in place, sometimes mounted on arches or pillars, crossing valleys, circling hills, passing by tunnels (of 60 and 66 meters), and cut out of the rock, - a long and capricious run.
For such a long distance, the fall is only 17 meters, that is 34 centimeters per kilometer, varying from 67 centimeters to 7 centimeters according to the section.

This giant undertaking was built both above ground and by tunnel in the Sernhac hills, and on walls and arches across valleys (Remoulins, Vers).
The most remarquable parts of this construction were, without doubt, the three arched bridge at Saint-Maximin over the Bornegre stream, and especially the enormous Pont du Gard which crosses the River Gardon not far from Remoulins.

You can watch my 1 min 49 sec Video Pont du Gard out of my Youtube channel.

You are right, the Pont du Gard is an outstanding technical achievement. I should build a small page some day.

The Pont-du-gard truly is an amazing structure and the area around it is absolutely beautiful.

Ah :-) Pont du Gard :-)) I remember my parents being scared as I hopped on top of it, and didn't even fear to fall off :-) Good to see that they still leave it up to everyone and don't overly fence it :-))
