Tourists traveling between the Red Sea and Luxor will assuredly pass through this City. Its ancient name was Cainepolis. The city is the busy capital of Qena Province and lies on the east bank of the Nile in a distanse a mile or so from the river.
The town itself has no features of tourist interest, but it is the nearest place to the Temple of Hathor at Dendera. There is a huge modern mosque of Sheikh el-Qenawi in the main square which attests to its importance. We saw it when were passing by the city.

The Qina - Mosque would had been fun to see, maybe next you visit. Lovely page! | tiabunna Fri May 9, 2008 13:45 UTC The frustrations of public transport and not being able to stop! Interesting though to see the 'real world' for locals and not just the 'tourist' places. I was struck by the amount of traffic there. | JLBG Wed Oct 24, 2007 21:17 UTC Haha, I was going to write the same thing than Lori! Yes, it is a shame that tours focus only on ancient Egypt and leave aside nowadays country! |
