  • The Monument of the Republic was the first sight which I saw in the late evening in Ankara. To take better photos I went to see it once more in the early morning. Build in 1927 in Ulus Square. It is a symbol of the struggle for independence on the part of Atatürk and the Turkish people in the War of Liberation.

Two figures of soldiers seeme to be even more impressive than the statue of Ataturk!

  • This building of the War of Independence Museum (Kurtuluþ Savaþý Müzesi) is located on Ulus Square just opposite the Monument of the Republic. It was originally the first Parliament building of the Republic of Turkey. Here the War of Liberation was planned and directed.

Being lack of time I couldn’t watch the museum inside. I only watched the building and the gun exposing at its outside territory. But no doubt it is interesting especially for those who concerns history of Turkey.

  • The Museum of the Republic is located close to the Liberation War Museum. Originally planned to house the People's Republic Party, it was actually the second building for the Turkish National Parliament, as its first was too small to meet the needs of the developing Turkish Republic. Archive of the important events in the early republican period are displayed here.

Things To Do: Temple of Augustus
  • Tip Rating:
  • The temple is located in the Ulus quarter of the city. It is also known as the Monumentum Ancyranum was built between 25 BC - 20 BC following the conquest of Central Anatolia by the Roman Empire and the formation of the Roman province of Galatia, with Ancyra (modern Ankara) as its administrative capital.
The temple, on the ancient Acropolis of Ancyra, was enlarged by the Romans in the 2nd century. In the 5th century it was converted into a church by the Byzantines. They claimed it for the Eastern church until Muslims built a Mosque on the site, next to the tomb of Haci Bayram. Not the best Roman site I should say.

Things To Do: Column of Julian
  • Tip Rating:
  • Behind the government buildings at the NE corner of Ulus square is a small park. The Column of Julian is located in the park (Hukumet Meydani). Erected in 362AC to commemorate the visit of the Emperor Julian. It stands fifteen meters high and has a typical leaf decoration on the capital. It has a nest at its top, haha!

Things To Do: Haci Bayram Mosque
  • Tip Rating:
  • This mosque is located in the Ulus quarter next to the Temple of Augustus. It was built in the early 15th century in Seljuk style by an unknown architect. It was subsequently restored by architect Sinan in the 16th century. The mosque was built in honor of Hacý Bayram Veli, whose tomb is next to the mosque (1428).

    Things To Do: Ankara Citadel
  • Tip Rating:
  • Ankara Citadel is one of the most important attractions of Ankara. Located atop a hill in the old side of Ankara; this ancient building dates back from the Hittities times, but historically its foundation is attributed to Galatians and completed by the Romans. After the Byzantines and Seljuk made many changes.

The citadel consists in two sections: The inner castle and the outer castle. The first one are still in good conditions, its wall were made of marble and red Ankara stone. The second one has few intact remains of its structure.

  • The foundations of the citadel were laid by the Galatians on a prominent lava outcrop, and the rest was completed by the Romans. The Byzantines and Seljuks further made restorations and additions.
You may enter the Hisar through the Finger Gate (Parmak Kapisi), also called the Clock Gate (Saatli Kapi) because of the public clock on the white octagonal tower.

  • The area within the walls is, surprisingly, a Turkish village. It’s situated right here in the very heart of Turkey's sprawling modern capital city. Not much has changed in the Citadel for centuries.
Walk straight from the gate up Kalekapisi Sokak. The small mosque in the Citadel, the Alaettin Camii, was originally built in the 1100s, but has been repaired and restored many times since.

Things To Do: Sark Kulesi - Eastern Tower
  • Tip Rating:
  • The hill which overlooks the city is crowned by the ruins of the old castle, which adds to the picturesqueness of the view, but only a few historic structures surrounding the old citadel have survived to our date.
If you keep walking ever upward to a flight of concrete stairs leading to the Sark Kulesi (SHARK koo-leh-see, Eastern Tower), from which there is a panoramic view of the Turkish capital. You’ll see many of the houses squeezed into the area between the walls are now historic monuments protected by UNESCO.

Hi Sergey! So, the Hittites used to be in Ankara --- it was gruesome pictures that I saw in Egypt with the Egyptians mutilating some of the Hittites...Did you see those reliefs in Egypt (on the pylons)?
    Trekki Sat Feb 28, 2009 07:58 UTC
Ah, Turkey finally :-) I love the new video format and like the music very much, a bit "Central Asian" :-) The Turkish village looks soooo picturesque and I also like the museum and its exhibits in your videos and TLs!
